  • Thornton was elected to the Continental Congress after the vote on the Declaration occurred, and didn't arrive in Philadelphia until November of 1776, but was granted permission to sign then.

  • New Hampshire was the first to replace it's royal government. On January 5th, 1776 they announced their own government with Matthew Thornton as the President.
