  • Bartlett was the first to vote for independence on July 2nd and the second to sign the Declaration on August 2nd, just after John Hancock.

  • After the Constitution was ratified in 1787, Bartlett was elected as the first senator from the state, but declined and became the state's first President. The title was later changed to Governor, so he was the first in the state with that title as well.
