  • Nelson carried the news from Williamsburg to Philadelphia the Virginia had approved voting for independence. This allowed fellow Virginian Richard Henry Lee to make his resolution.

  • He served as a General in the Virginia militia, and ordered his troops to fire on his own home during the battle of Yorktown (because the British were occupying it).
