  • Hooper is known as the prophet of independence because of a letter he wrote in April 1774 where he predicted the eventual separation from England. This is thought to be the first such prediction.

  • Though he was a strong supporter of independence, an incident in his younger years left him wary of democracy, which he feared would lead to mob rule.
