  • In 1777 Whipple presented the order to the famous John Paul Jones, making the latter the Captain of the Ranger.

  • Whipple is famous for taking his slave Prince with him during the Revolutionary War. Prince is buried in the same cemetery as Whipple, with a marker denoting him as a veteran of the war.
